I have been having a rough couple of weeks. People near me know this – I have been vocal about it whenever they are nearby. It’s been busy and stressful, and I’ve had some challenges at work.
This is why it’s been far too long since my last post – but something happened yesterday that was infinitely bloggable, and that changed my outset on life for at least a little while.
I have been teaching a course on Graphic Design at Camosun College here in Victoria. It is an evening course, 4 hours a night from 5:30 til 9:30. It’s been a challenge fitting everything into my day, so yesterday I skipped lunch. By the time I left school at 10:00, I was ravenous. Victoria being what it is, there isn’t much open after 10:00 pm, and I knew that at home, the cupboards were bare, so I turned in at a 24 Hr. Wendy’s.
It was a long line up at the drive thru, so when I saw another car coming from the other direction to enter the same line, I considered gunning it to get ahead of him. The space was there, and I probably could have made it, but I decided to be mister nice guy, and let this dude in. I think this is important for the next part of this story, but I can’t say I know for sure.
I made my order, waited, and eventually got to the till. I had my wallet in hand, ready to make the transaction. The girl at the window said, “That guy just paid for you” and shoved a welcome bag of greasy nourishment in my direction.
“What?” I asked.
“I don’t know why, but he insisted on paying for this order.”
“Why?” I asked.
“I don’t know why,” She said. I was so stunned I had already forgotten she just told me that. She continued, “he just did.”
By this time the person who had bought my dinner was gone. It was a dark night, and a description of the car ahead of me didn’t seem important enough to remember, so I really don’t know anything about my benefactor or the car he or she was driving. I’ll tell you one thing though, sometimes, my belief rating in karma goes way up, and sometimes, you get that little bit of help to keep on going just when you need it.
