Gratitude

I am grateful fo Khalsa Day and Vaisakhi. This is a holiday celebrated by Sikhs, and back in the day, when we lived at 60th and Main in Vancouver, it was a big deal in my life. Today marks the first Vaisakhi parade in Victoria in over a century. It was fun – lots of demonstrations, sights and sounds, and tons of really, really good free food. I had the best samosas I’ve ever tasted today. I also am grateful to the gentleman at the temple who asked me if I had any questions. I learned a thing or two that I didn’t know before about the SIkh religion, and it was good to do so with Coop there, listening intently.

I am grateful for a quick round of croquet with my family, including Farley in his pyjamas, right before bedtime.

I am grateful for tomatoes and mayonaisse on toast with black pepper. The sum of those things is so much more than in parts.

I am grateful for an hour of telly before bed with Julie.

I am grateful for a late morning for us grownups and Saturday morning cartoons for them kids.

I am grateful for the satisfying quick project today that was making, painting, and installing a shelf in the kitchen. The house plants that used to be in the way aren’t as much anymore.

I am grateful for time spent hanging out in close, but not too close proximity with everyone in my family all day today.

I am grateful for a friend dropping by today, who was able to stay for tea, and then soup, and was, as always, a ray of sunshine in our home.

I am grateful for commas.

I am grateful for time in the studio this morning.

I am grateful for family fun night: Julie’s pick. It was homemade pizza and croquet. While Farley and I were setting up the croquet set, Farley saw his similarly aged buddy come home across the street. We learned that they had just ordered pizza too, and then decided we should all get together and share all the pizza. We then played croquet with all the kids, and it was a great night. I am so glad they are our neighbours. I like those folks!

I am grateful for the bright green new leaves on the oak trees in my neighbourhood. It won’t last long, they turn a golden olive colour after they’ve been out for a while. For now, they look cheery and excited to be here.

I am grateful for date night. Julie and I went and watched the sun go down sitting in the Adirondack chairs on Kitty Islet. The weather was warm and the wind was still, and the brief time that we spent there felt like a week of vacation. Simple pleasures are the best kind.

I am grateful for time spent with my kids and spouse checking out all the stuff the lads do all day at student led conferences.

I am grateful for ice cream cones with my lads after their martial arts class, during which I painted at the studio, because Wednesdays worked out like that.

I am grateful for family fun night: my pick. We ordered pizza and watched the original 1978 Superman movie. It actually holds up pretty well. The kids dug it, which I was hoping for, but it still surprised me that they did.
