Gratitude

I am grateful for my Dad and all the other fathers in my life, on this Father’s day.

I was talking with him on the phone this morning, we were considering the benefits of fatherhood. I mentioned that compassion for one’s own parents were one of them for me. Getting a different perspective on the parent-child relationship helps me understand what it was like for him and my mom when I was a kid.

There is another benefit too, he mentioned, when you get to be a grandfather (or grandmother). It’s getting to see your son have to deal with his kids the same way you had to when he was little. Through many years, particularly the teenage ones, I gave my parents the gears on a routine basis. Now my dad enjoys watching ME get some of those same gears.

I’ve decided to call the emotion he is describing Dadenfreude.

Fact is, I was dealt a fine hand on the Dad front. I am grateful as all heck for that guy, and he deserves every shred of gratitude AND Dadenfreude he can get his hands on.

I am grateful for breakfast hash Julie and the boys made for me this morning.

I am grateful for Farley’s last baseball game of the season.

I am grateful for a few quiet hours alone this afternoon. Julie took the boys out, and I managed to complete a fussy computer project that involved taking a Mac Mini all apart and sticking it all back together again. Victory!

I am grateful for aloo gobi Julie made for dinner tonight. It was delicious.

Gratitude

I am grateful for a fun day at the end of the year Scout family picnic. There was a fort built of lashed driftwood that featured a 7′ platform and flag pole. There was kayaking, sailing, and motorboating. There were hot dogs. There were taco salads in dorito bags. It was epic.

I am grateful for time spent with Julie in the hillbilly hot tub after all the schlepping was done.

Gratitude

I am grateful for a whole dang day at the studio.

I am grateful for lunch with Julie.

I am grateful for family fun night: Farley’s pick. We got takeout from McDonald’s and went to a park where Farley could bike and Cooper could ride on his new scooter. It was a nice relaxed way to enjoy a summer evening.

Gratitude

I am grateful for a day where it all worked out, despite severe over scheduling.

I am grateful for a thrift store find. The lads needed a CD player for library audio books, and I was redicent to buy something that justified the birth of yet another disposable small appliance destined to cross an ocean to get here. Found a second hand one that fit the bill for $7. SCORE!

I am grateful for Farley’s school concert. The performed a Philippino song about a kid who buys a balloon, loses it, and wishes they had spent it on food instead. I quite enjoyed the whole show; as I always do.

I am grateful for the Toronto Raptors.

Gratitude

I am grateful for two kids who worked with me on ideas to make getting out of the house in the morning easier for everyone. We came up with a morning checklist together, and they totally stuck to it, and it totally worked.

II am grateful for a whole freakin’ day at the studio.

I am grateful for lunch with Julie.

I am grateful for leftover turkey.

Gratitude

I am grateful for a few hours in the studio today for the FIRST TIME in TOO LONG A TIME.

I am grateful for time with my lads tonight. Julie was out, but we took it easy, which isn’t easy to do at the end of the school year, what with the fundraisers, concerts, and end of the year volunteer opportunities. My brother referred to it as Junecember earlier today. Accurate.

I am grateful for weather that’s too hot. Much better than too cold!

Gratitude

I am grateful for a cuss-ton of errands accomplished today. One of these days I need to get into the studio, but in the meantime I am setting them up and knocking them down.

I am grateful for Coop’s last Cub meeting of the season; actually, forever. He moves on to Scouts next year. It was a good one tonight though – we Kayaked half of them from Cadboro Bay to a spot just short of 10 Miile Point, switched the kids who we ferried there in cars, then paddled back again. It was a gorgeous night to be out on the water.

Gratitude

I am grateful for a visit from my parents in-law, to celebrate my father in law’s imminent 80th birthday.

They picked today to take in Farley’s baseball game. It was great, even though it was his team’s first loss for the season. Auntie J came too. Never in my life have I ever been a sports fan. I am enjoying these games far more than I thought I would.

I am grateful for Coop, who announced every batter on the stadium’s PA for the game.

I am grateful for a crab dinner in our backyard we enjoyed after the game.

I am grateful for the Fargo television series. I just embarked on Season 3, episode 1. That’s some fine telly.

Gratitude

I am grateful for time spent on a lake with all the boats I own in the water, our kayaks, and El Banana, the canoe, which currently resides with the friends and their kids that came out to paddle with the boys and I today.

I am grateful for custom made pizzas at their place while we hung out on patio furniture at their place and watched deer with fawns in their backyard this evening.

I am grateful for conveniently timed fireworks at the Harbour Cats baseball game that we were able to watch from our kitchen window before putting the kids to bed, well past their bedtime.

Gratitude

I am grateful for time spent with Julie this morning, mostly driving around getting some errands done.

I am grateful for lunch with my old pal Greg.

I am grateful for time spent quietly sitting at the Gage gallery, and for Hazel Harris’s show there. She has a delightful and whimsical way of painting the characters in her life.

I am grateful for family fun night: my pick. We ate BLT’s, then played a board game in the back yard, where Farley could swing and bounce on the tramp when it wasn’t his turn. After egg nog ice cream sandwiches with cookies Cooper made for dessert, we retired inside to screen a few videos of when the boys were little before putting them to bed.

I am grateful for time spent with Julie in the hillbilly hot tub tonight.

I am grateful for an enjoyable end to an otherwise somewhat stressful week.
